NHIC to provide free insurance coverage to all Saudis
RIYADH – The National Health Insurance Center (NHIC) will provide free insurance coverage to all Saudi citizens, official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health Dr. Muhammad Al-Abdel Ali has confirmed.
Al-Abdel Ali made the remarks during an interview with Al-Arabiya. He said everyone benefiting from government health services, including the unemployed and social security recipients, among other categories, will be covered by all NHIC health insurance programs.
One of the main pillars of the health strategy adopted by the NHIC is to provide free insurance coverage to citizens and give them access to free treatment, Al-Abdel Ali added.
The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman has given his approval to the Cabinet’s decision to establish the Health Holding Company as well as organize the National Health Insurance Center (NHIC).
According to the Cabinet decision, the new National Health Insurance Center (NHIC) will purchase health services provided by the Health Holding Company or its subsidiaries. The budgetary allocations from the Ministry of Health for the provision of health services at all levels will be transferred to the NHIC, in accordance with the plan, phases and mechanisms decided by the health sector privatization supervision committee.
The NHIC would submit the comprehensive vision for Citizens Health Insurance to the Economic and Development Affairs Council Strategy Committee for approval, before starting to implement Citizens Health Insurance.
All citizens eligible for health care will benefit from NHIC health services if they are not covered by other health systems, programs or services provided to them by entities other than the Ministry of Health.
Citizens who are covered by other health systems, programs or special services provided to them by agencies other than the ministry will also benefit from the services of the NHIC. This will be in line with what is approved by the Council of Ministers based on a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance and similar bodies.
Beneficiaries also include Saudis working in the public and private sectors; their family members; as well as the children of a Saudi mother of a non-Saudi husband residing in the Kingdom or of a non-Saudi woman married to a Saudi man, and of a non-Saudi man married to a Saudi woman residing in the Kingdom, in the event that their health care is not covered by cooperative health insurance.
Beneficiaries of the NHIC health service also include non-Saudi workers in government sectors, if they are not covered by special health systems, programs or services.
