Tesla launches auto insurance with premiums based on real-time driver behavior

If you are a very careful driver, own a Tesla, and live in Texas, your driving behavior could be rewarded with lower insurance premiums.

As Electrek Reports, Tesla has just launched its auto insurance service in Texas, but unlike insurance it offers in California, Texans can take advantage of real-time driver behavior monitoring. This should mean that the more carefully you drive, the lower your premium will be each month.

This new insurance is available to all Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y owners in Texas and does not require the installation of an additional device in your vehicle. Like the company Explain, “Tesla uses specific in-vehicle features to gauge your premium based on your actual driving. You will make monthly payments based on your driving behavior instead of traditional factors such as credit, age, gender, claim history and driving records used by other insurers. “

The premium paid will be decided by a driver “Security score“, which is based on five different metrics. They include hard braking, aggressive cornering, dangerous following distance, forced autopilot disengagement, and number of forward collision warnings per 1,000 miles. is on a scale of 0 to 100 and can be viewed through the Tesla app along with the premium price payable for the following month. The premium also takes into account how much you drive, what vehicle is driven, where you live, what coverage you have and how many vehicles are insured.

An average scoring driver will apparently pay between 20% and 40% lower premiums than their competitors charge, according to Tesla. When purchasing insurance for the first time, Tesla will assume a safety score of 90, which will then adjust based on driving behavior. As for the price, it seems to go from $ 80 to $ 130 assuming your rating doesn’t drop below 90.
